Project Description
Today’s Mumbai (earlier Bombay), a city of International repute , enjoys its importance as an all weather natural sea port on the west coast of India. It is at this port European Trade delegation first landed on Indian soil during Mogul Era. The British constructed the imposing Gateway of India a structure in stone, at Apollo Bunder seafront in 1924 to commemorate the arrival of their King George V and Queen Mary in India through this port in 1911.
Mumbai had a small population of native people before the city gradually developed into a financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India, It attracted people from all parts of India, It is the most cosmopolitan city of India with its population representing people from all the other states of India. Its present population is estimated to be around 12 million (1.2 crore) which is highly disproportionate to its small land area of 437 sq. km.( about 27000 person per sq. km area). Among this teeming population of 12 millions, there lives a community, known as Kokni Muslims of Mumbai numbering around 15,000. They are natives of Mumbai, as their ancestors were born here. They are commonly known as Juma Masjid Kokni Muslims for the reason that the control and administration of Juma Masjid Trust was entrusted to this community by an order passed in 1934 by H’ble High Court at Mumbai, which framed an scheme for the management of Juma Masjid Trust.
