Need for an Association:

Till 1980, the oldest part of the city i.e. South-Central Mumbai had appreciable concentration of members of KokniJamat in many streets of Bhendi Bazaar, Null Bazar, Dongriand Nagpada area as evident from signifcant number of “ SHAFAEE” mosques in this part of Mumbai under the administration of Kokni community. (See SHAFAEE MOSQUES). With the expansion of families and also of Mumbai city to Mumbai Suburban and beyond, many families gradually shifted to suburbs as well as to nearby towns; extending from Thane to Kalyan on Central Railway; from Borivali to Virar on Western Railway and to satellite townships of NaviMumbai from Vashi to Khargarand Panvel. Some Koknis of Mumbai have also migrated to other cities on a permanent basis. A sizeable number of jamat members are alsoworking /living abroad as NRIs or have adopted Citizenship of foreign countries.

This spreading out of community households to distant places has restricted the interaction between the community members to a few occasions such as family functions, marriages or deaths in the community. Some of the Jamat members meet each other after many years on such occasions. The interaction between new generation of our Jamat is minimal. It is feared that after few years, community members specially present young generation, may become strangers to each other. Over the years this situation may result in community getting disintegrated and losing its glorious identity.

In this ocean of Mumbai’s population of 11.2 million our tiny Kokni Jamat does not  have an identity either on account of its numerical strength or due to political / economical / social status.A commonly heard complaint is that in-spite of our community existing over the decades in Mumbai city our Jamat does not have any known welfare organization to help weaker section of Jamat with financial, educational, and medical assistance. Many communities who arrived in Mumbai much later have established their welfare organizations to serve their communities

First step towards formation of Association:

In an informal meeting held in around 2014, some members of Jamat discussed these concerns and after thoughtful deliberation decided to establish a welfare organization which will primarily act as a facilitator to connect Kokni Muslims of Mumbai residing within and beyond Mumbai and also to undertake welfare activities for weaker section of the Kokni Community. The youth of the community is progressing very well in various fields of education, profession and business. Their involvement with the organization will be beneficial to association and the community. Hence the senior members of Jamat decided to initiate the process of establishing the organization with emphasis that larger participation of community should be ensured. The message was spread to more members of the community and after positive response a meeting was organized to discuss this issue in details and establish the organization.

A letter containing the above feelings was sent as an invitation for a meeting on 19th, Feb.2014 to discuss on formation of the Association.

The main intention of having a web site for Association is :

to collect data on the members of community in a standard format and store it on the website by asking the members to upload their profiles on line.
to build up a directory of families and the members of Jamat, available for viewing by other members of community.
to collect data on past eminent distinguished personalities. This data will be a source of knowledge and inspiration for our future generations.
to identify members of community involved in different businesses, professions and fields of eminence and to compile a separate directory of such members. This will provide an easy platform for increased interaction between members of the same and related profession or carrying out similar activities .
to help locate and connect old friends from locality, school, college and relatives presently not in contact due to shifting of residence to far off places.
to provide a platform for interaction and exchange of ideas and news.

First Welfare Activity – Ramadan 2014:

In order not to loose the fervor and enthusiasm generated after first meeting, some members suggested that we should join together and undertake welfare activity keeping in mind the then coming month of Ramadhan (2014). Thus some members came together and pooled their Zakat amount and arranged distribution of a month’s ration to needy families of members of kokni jamat. Alhamd-u-lillah bags of ration were distributed to 200 families one week before Ramadhan ,with the help of volunteers. These volunteers undertook appreciable efforts to distribute the bags to families as far as Kalyan, Mumbra, Nalasopara. Let us remember in our prayers all those who joined together and undertook this welfare activity. A wheel chair was also provided to a certified handicapped member of Kokni jamat.

An old woman having hip fracture due to fall was given financial help of Rs 10,000/- as contribution towards surgical cost. Besides this cash assistance was given to nine families and two needy persons were given cash assistance of Rs 7000/- towards purchase of daily use medicine.

Zakat Distribution Activity 2015:

The Association received appreciative feedback in respect of distribution of ration bags to needy families of the community during Ramadhan (2014). The volunteers informed that there is renewed request for supplying similar Ration bags in Ramadhan 2015 also from the recipients. Hence arrangements were made to supply about (220) ration bags during Ramadhan 2015 also. The list of food items supplied and the photographs of the Zakat Distribution Activity are displayed below for the kind information of community members.
